What Is Progressive Die And Stamping?
A sheet metal progressive die is a specialized tool used in metalworking. Progressive stamping, which involves the use of such dies, is a metalworking method that can encompass punching, coining, bending and several other ways of modifying metal raw material, combined with an automatic feeding system. The feeding system pushes a strip of metal through the die, and at each station of the die, a specific operation is performed on the metal strip, gradually transforming it into the desired part.
Progressive dies can achieve high precision. For example, the die insert tolerance can be as small as +/- 0.005mm, and for high - precision progressive blanking dies for tiny iPhone metal parts, the precision can reach ±0.003mm. Some progressive dies can have a stamping speed of up to 1000 SPM/min (strokes per minute), and for certain applications, the highest stamping speed can be 600 SPM/min or more. The tooling life of progressive dies is relatively long, typically ranging from 50 - 300 million times, which makes them suitable for high - volume production.
